As I pen this in the balmy days of spring, the tax days of mid-April are still in the rear view mirror, but I am looking forward to baking my body in Florida"s relentless summer sunshine.
It is "betwixt and between" time for movies. It is too soon for the teenage, guilty-pleasure blockbuster of summer and the Academy nominees are drifting to the DVD and rental shelves. Nonetheless, for me, the movie theater still beckons.
I knew nothing about the V for Vendetta comic book series before seeing the movie. I was quite surprised by it. This is a futuristic British world, festooned with government cameras, where the media panders to neo-Nazi dressing fascist government of thugs.
The hero is a dark, Shakespearean quoting knight, wielding a chest full of Japanese fighting swords and a weirdly disturbing, grinning white mask. He saves the girl and introduces himself with a tongue-twisting soliloquy. The hero, V for Vendetta, challenges the government by threatening to blow-up a government building in the British tradition of Guy Fawkes. He is always one-step ahead of the bad guys, wreaking his murderous revenge for their cruelty and corruption.
The movie makes a unwittingly, depiction of the madness and inspiration of terrorists. Blow up the building, V thinks, and the public will see that a government trampling their individual rights is more of a threat than their irrational fears (yeah, right.
Although I pump my movies through my almost fantastic classic Klipsch Khorn loudspeakers system, I still appreciate movie theaters with speakers lining the walls and stadium seating. These venues are particularly good for action films, my favorite genre being the sci-fi action movie. In this case, it was a delight to wander into the big box and see a late spring entry. If you like the same genre, I think you will like V for Vendetta.
The domino scene (where V tips over black and red dominoes to form a giant letter V) involved 22,000 dominoes, was assembled by four professional domino assemblers, and took 200 hours to set up.
In the scene where V has Creedy cornered in the greenhouse, V plays Beethoven"s Fifth Symphony. In Morse Code, the opening notes of this piece are. or V. This is also the reason for the piece"s enormous popularity in England during World War Two. (The Allied slogan was "V for Victory. The Symphony"s opening was used as a call-sign in the European broadcasts of the BBC during World War II in reference to Winston Churchill"s "V for Victory.
The name Evey is pronounced EV, with E being the fifth letter of the alphabet, V being five in Latin and Y being the 25th letter (5 squared) On a clock that has an hour hand and a minute hand, the time 11:05 makes a V. These two numbers, 11 and 5, where 11 is November, and 5 is the day of November, spell out: the fifth of November. "Remember, remember the 5th of November." The voice-overs about the futility of non-violence and the definition of humanism that can be heard during the end credits are sound bites from speeches given by Malcolm X and Gloria Steinem, respectively.
In the memorial for those that died as a result of the virus, the statues are of children playing "Ring around the Rosie. There is a frequently cited (though untrue) urban legend that this nursery rhyme was about the bubonic plague.
SPOILER: When Evey is being captured by a member of the commando outside Dietrich"s house, if we look closer, we can see that the commando member has burnt flesh (it is visible trough the commando mask"s hole for the eyes) so it is obvious that he is V. But it is visible only for a second.

Titanic-I watch it several times a year, I own the soundtrack, Kate Winslet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Billy Zane, Victor Garber and Bernard Hill are among my favorite actors, and yet for me, the film is mixed.
Everything in Titanic is uneven. Some performances are great, where as others leave much to be desired, there are some great lines in the film and others that are awful, etc. The primary problem is a lack of realism.
First off with the story. How likely would it be that Jack would fall in love with Rose and risk his life for her if he knew her for only 3 days? I find the romantic scenes mixed, and while they have a few good moments, my favorite parts of the movie are when the ship sinks and with scenes with the crew and Billy Zane. Also the class envy lines get to a point of annoyance. The quarters in steerage on Titanic were some of the best. Rich and poor alike sacrificed their lives to save others as the ship went down. I really couldn"t understand why James Cameron hated the rich saying he earned more money off of this film than any of the people on Titanic ever earned.
Then the feminist lines grate on me too. Constantly throughout the film feminist messages are shown such as how women have tougher choices than men, how all the rich men are arrogant fools etc. I just have to wonder how many of the women on Titanic would still want to be treated the same way as men when the order "women and children first was given.
Now that we"re done with the movie"s "buisness and politics" let"s take a look at the acting.
DiCaprio-He"s now one of my favorite actors, but I didn"t care for him in this. He acting like an American tough guy did"t exactly work, he"d been better off as a European artist. Part of it was the lines he was given (Such as "I"m the king of the world. He does get better as the film goes on.
Winslet-Amazing in the film, perfectly cast and helps carry the movie.
Billy Zane-If he weren"t in it, I might not watch the movie. His portrayal of Cal, Rose"s fiancée is outstanding. Maybe because his character is so unrealistically pompous and snobby (Even to the point where he pushes someone out of a life boat saying "Get out, you"ll swamp us. His lines are hilarious in the film, everything he says is great, I quote them all the time. My favorites are "I put my faith in you good sir. Not even God could sink it. Twice the size of Moratania, and far more luxurious" and countless others. He really helps the movie.
Supporting cast-Bill Paxton is solid, Victor Garber is underused but brilliant as the designer of the ship, Mr. Andrews. I love his line "She"s made of iron sir, and I assure you, she will sink. Bernard Hill gives a good performance as the ship"s Captain, all the crew members are great as well. I didn"t care for Rose"s mother, who I thought was too unrealistic in her hatred. Cal"s henchman was also unrealistic, I mean that he would kill someone just for his boss" love? I don"t know.
The Digital effects are outstanding and a joy to watch. The music is amazing and my favorite score of all time. The cinematography, sets, costumes and sound is amazing.
All in all, Titanic is a movie I mixed with. I watch it and I love certain moments, but cringe at others. I just wished they could have made a more balanced film to watch. Would I recommend it? Strongly, but I don"t like it so much for the love story, as I do for the other elements of the film. It was the classic that wasn"t.

After reading the other comments, I was glad there is such a common consent and unanimity on the fact that the part about the ship was good while the plot, particularly the love story, was naive and boring. Even the dialogue is interesting and relatively witty in the parts about the ship and the characters other than Jack and Rose, while all conversation between the two lovers is boring and naive. I am surprised there wasn"t much effort in creating a more mature and deeper love story, especially with the effort put in the movie as a whole. James Cameron did a very good job directing the ship and her sinking, characters like Moly Brown were amusing but there was nothing special about the main characters. I wonder what was behind the choice of Leonardo DiCaprio for that role, given his young look (One expected a more mature looking man. I would advise people to watch it and appreciate the technical effects but with low expectations of the plot.

It is my number one favorite movie. All of my friends know it. Whenever i bring it up, they make fun of me. My brother and dad mock the characters for repeating Jack and Rose"s names so many times. In my opinion though, they did not give this movie a chance.
It is a beautiful love story! The historic details in the movie are also fairly accurate. I have seen this movie many times and can quote word for word during about 85% it. That is how much i love it. I recommend it to anyone who loves 2 watch a good love story a love story.

The BEST music video I"ve seen! So heart-warming, pure, beautiful, yet powerful

Remember she started on Soul Train, her dancing was not very good then. Spike Lee"s Do the Right Thing is a powerful film with a phenomenal cast. Everyone gives a strong performance and causes the viewer to feel engaged in the film"s concentrated plot. Every person in the film seems real. I loved the beginning sequence of the film. The girls" dancing was entertaining and a great way illustrate the time period of the film. Do the Right Thing is extremely emotional. The concept and plot is a touchy subject, and Lee clearly casts himself as Mookie to reveal his views on the issues at hand. This is a wise decision, for Lee effectively plays the confused, yet passionate character. Mookie is a very complex character whom one must thoroughly analyze in order to somewhat understand. In addition, the coloring of the film was intense, which added to what was going on on screen.
Although the racial tension was extremely disturbing and strong, it was accurately depicted. It was heartbreaking to watch the cops strangle Radio Raheem. It was if the cop subconsciously knew he was killing the boy, but just could not stop himself. The riot was especially upsetting, for everything went out of control because different ethnic groups could not get along. Spike Lee does a great job of recuperating after the film"s wild climax. The viewer feels a huge sense of relief after the horrible and severe fight scene is over, and Lee shows that the community has calmed down as well. Do the Right Thing is a thought-provoking and expressive film that fully deserves all its praise.

Amerikkka in 3 minutes and 34 seconds... If he had just given him change in the first place none of this would have happened. Dance scene from bye bye birdie inspired Spike Lee to put this in after he saw it at the cinema in the 60s. The guy @ 0:54 haha. classic.

 

I mean, how can you not love Rosie? She"s fabulous! ???. The tiddies scene was so unecessary yet necessary at the same time. The foo fighters video walk was inspired from this movie. Good night. The Latino guy was the landlord on Martin. The Asian store owner did 2 seasons on In Living Color. I am a mechanical engineering student, i dont know why I am listening this lecture a day before exam.
